LEAD AGENCY
California, CalTrans

Description:

The project proposes to extend State Route 180 in the western part of Fresno County. The project limits would begin at the Shields Avenue interchange at Interstate 5 and run
almost 23 miles to connect to State Route 180 west of the Kings Slough Overflow bridge, southeast of Mendota. The new portion of State Route 180 would be a two-lane
conventional highway containing 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot shoulders. A four-lane expressway is not anticipated to be needed for more than 20 years, so that is not being
considered. The proposed right-of-way would be approximately 100 feet wide to allow for linear drainage ditches.

A major portion of the State Route 180 extension would be constructed on the Shields Avenue alignment. Fresno County owns Shields Avenue and would relinquish the rightof-
way to Caltrans for this project. An approximate 8.5-mile section of Shields Avenue from Interstate 5 to Fairfax Avenue is paved, but Shields Avenue is not paved east of
Fairfax. A new roadway would be constructed on four to six miles of this unpaved section, depending on which alternative is selected. Caltrans is proposing to reconstruct
the paved section of Shields Avenue because it does not meet Caltrans standards. An 2 existing bridge about 2.7 miles east of the Interstate 5 interchange spans the California
Aqueduct. This bridge will be reconstructed with a longer span, with no piers in the channel, to accommodate the requirements of the California Department of Water
Resources. This will result in a deeper bridge depth and a more elevated profile. There are several Fresno County roads that will intersect State Route 180. Although each
intersection will go through an intersection control evaluation to determine the final configuration, it is probable that the local roads with larger traffic volumes will be
designed as roundabouts.
