Description:

Cattle Point Road is part of the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway and the sole access for 270 residents who live on the southeast tip of San Juan Island. In addition, it also accommodates more than 250,000 annual visitors to the San Juan Island National Historical Park, Cattle Point Lighthouse, and the Interpretative Center for Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Coastal erosion was wearing away at the base of the bluff that supports Cattle Point Road and was threatening to collapse about 500 feet of the roadway and the buried telecommunication and power utilities beside it.

The Federal Highway Administration, in partnership with the NPS San Juan Island National Historical Park, Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and San Juan County realigned a 4,950-foot section of the road approximately 300 feet inland, made improvements to the two scenic vistas located at each end of the project, and made improvements to Mount Finlayson's eastern trailhead.

The project was designed to protect the roadway and utilities from erosion for the next 100 years.
