Description:
The Detroit Department of Transportation proposes to construct the Coolidge Terminal Replacement facility, a new operations and maintenance replacement bus facility in Detroit, Michigan. The project includes demolition of six existing structures located on the existing Coolidge bus terminal site, and construction of three new bus maintenance, storage, and operations center buildings and associated infrastructure at the existing facility. Environmental and Community Outcomes
Climate Change – Reduction in Greenhouse Gases:
DDOT is evaluating alternative-fueled buses, including electric buses, to gradually expand to meet the long-term goal of a full transition to a zero-emissions bus fleet. Space in the Coolidge Terminal is planned to be used for heavy repair, for the expansion of the battery electric bus (BEB) deployment of DDOT’s bus fleet, or another alternative fuel as DDOT determines the most appropriate fuels for their fleet. In addition, two charging station rooms will be constructed to house the necessary equipment to charge up to 14 electric powered buses that are anticipated for DDOT’s future 216-vehicle fleet – the capacity of the Coolidge at full build out.
Climate Change - Sustainability and Resilience:
The Coolidge Facility plans to construct a Coach Services building dedicated to servicing and washing the bus fleet. The bus wash program will enhance sustainability and resilience of the facility by incorporating the use of a rainwater harvesting cistern to reduce potable water use and to provide cost savings. To manage stormwater run-off associated with the new Coolidge Terminal, the facility plans to use a series of bioswales located around the perimeter of the site for bioretention. The use of a bioretention stormwater management system improves sustainability and resilience by providing benefits to water quality by reducing stormwater run-off velocity and by increasing the retention time to filter sediment and pollutants.
