Description:

The location for Corridor H, a 100-mile long segment between Elkins and the Virginia State line, was approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in its Record of Decision issued in August of 1996. This project had a legal challenge that resulted in a settlement. The settlement agreement resulted in the portion of Corridor H between Elkins and the Virginia to be sub-divided into nine (9) separate projects. Each project would result in the completion of a useable highway section, connecting existing population centers and transportation routes. Each of these nine projects are to be approved in a separate Record of Decision (ROD). The settlement agreement allows each project to proceed independently of the others. The State DOT is currently working to re-evaluate the SFEIS prior to developing an Amended ROD.

The Parsons-to-Davis Project is a component of the Appalachian Highway System's I-79 in WV to I-81 in VA Corridor H Project. It will contribute to addressing large-scale needs identified by the U.S. Congress and the Appalachian Regional Commission in mid-1960’s.  It will be a 4-lane highway but will maintain connectivity with local roads, farms, etc. Approximately 8 miles long, the Parsons to Davis Project is the final Corridor H link between I-79 (59 miles to the west) and the completed 66 mile-long Davis to Wardensville section of Corridor H. Currently the only highway between Parsons and Davis is US 219 which is a 2-lane mountainous roadway with narrow shoulders, steep grades and sharp curves, and many no passing zones that carries all east-west traffic including school buses, heavy trucks and first responders. Construction of the Parsons to Davis project will provide a safer and more efficient roadway option to through-traffic and will provide current US 219 residents and business with reduced traffic related issues.
