Description:
The I-71 interchange with US 36/SR 37 is located approximately 20 miles north of Columbus, Ohio the state capital. It is the only interchange for 10 miles in either direction on I-71 and provides a critical transportation link for the region. In Ohio, I-71 is a north-south interstate route connecting Cleveland to Cincinnati. US 36/SR 37 is a principal arterial that runs east-west across central Ohio. US 36/SR 37 connects the City of Delaware and points west with the Village of Sunbury and points east. Because of the constraints created by Alum Creek Reservoir, Hoover Reservoir, and the Norfolk Southern and CSX rail lines, US 36/SR 37 is one of the few east-west connections across Delaware County. Additionally, over time, many businesses have located along the US 36/SR 37 corridor, and given its proximity to the state capital and to nearby distribution and industrial centers in Delaware County, it has become a busy truck route. Today, over 32,000 vehicles a day access the interchange to enter or exit I-71. The proposed project will build a parallel alignment, which will be called Sunbury Parkway, south of the existing US 36/SR 37 Interchange. Additionally, a new interchange will be constructed at Sunbury Parkway and Interstate 71 that will connect with the existing interchange through collector/distributor roads. According to traffic projections, traffic will be diverted by the proposed new alignment such that the existing interchange and US 36/SR 37 will operate at acceptable levels of service.
