Description:
The Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit) proposes to extend its light rail system from Angle Lake Station in the city of SeaTac, WA south to the city of Federal Way, WA. Two primary alignments are under consideration. The preferred alignment would generally use the Interstate 5 right of way, and the other would generally use State Route 99 ROW. Each would have at least three stations with additional options possible. Sound Transit is also exploring alternatives that combine the I-5 and SR 99 alignments. Depending on the alternative and the specific location, the alignment could be at-grade, in a trench, or elevated. The project would serve the cities of SeaTac, Kent, Des Moines, and Federal Way in a corridor that struggles with growing but unmet north-south transit demand and the challenge of serving populations that are highly transit-dependent. Anticipated growth will worsen the severe congestion that already hinders mobility and reliability, and limitations imposed by geography and existing infrastructure make high-capacity transit an important investment in this part of the region.
