Description:

The proposed project would realign and widen FM 812 from a two-lane undivided roadway to a divided roadway consisting of four 12-foot-wide travel lanes (two in each direction) with 10-foot-wide outside shoulders and would enhance accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians with the addition of 10-foot-wide shared-use paths (SUPs) on both sides of the roadway.  The proposed project would extend for a total of 9.49 miles and would include the realignment of a 1.46-mile section of FM 812 from US 183 to FM 973.

From US 183 to Piland Triangle, FM 812 would be separated by a 16-foot-wide center-turn lane. This section would include improvements to the bridges over N. Fork Dry Creek, S. Fork Dry Creek, and Dry Creek E. The typical ROW width for this section would vary from 165 feet to 504 feet (the wider sections for grading). The proposed project would also realign existing FM 812 at its intersection with FM 973.

Through the town of Elroy, generally from Piland Triangle to Peterson Road, the proposed improvements would be constructed predominantly within the existing ROW. This section would be separated by a 14-foot-wide center-turn lane. This section would include improvements to the bridge over Maha Creek. The typical ROW width for this section would vary from approximately 100 feet to 185 feet (the wider sections for grading).

From Peterson Road to SH 21, the proposed improvements would realign FM 812 to straighten out existing curves and widen the roadway to include 4-foot-wide inside shoulders. The grassy median would taper to a 16-foot-wide paved median as the roadway approaches SH 21. The typical ROW width for this section would vary from approximately 320 feet to 408 feet.

The proposed project would realign FM 973 to eliminate two substandard 90-degree curves at the intersection with FM 812. The proposed FM 973 realigned section would typically include four 12-foot-wide travel lanes (two in each direction), 10-foot-wide SUPs on both sides of the roadway, and a 14-foot-wide center-turn lane. This section would include improvements to the bridge over N. Fork Dry Creek. The typical ROW width for this section would vary from approximately 100 feet to 344 feet.

The proposed project would realign FM 812 between US 183 and FM 973 partially on new location. The existing northern section of FM 812 that would remain would be transferred to Travis County after the proposed construction is complete.

The maximum depth of impacts for the proposed project would be 5 feet in areas where the pavement would be widened, a maximum depth of 10 feet for cross-culverts, and a maximum depth of 17 feet for storm sewers. At bridges, channel improvements may require 3-foot depth of impacts as well as 30 to 60 feet deep drilled shafts or pile foundations.
