Description:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to realign a 3.5-mile-long section of US Interstate 101 in response to landslide and roadway failures which have caused damage for decades. The project area runs between Wilson Creek to about 9 miles south of Crescent City, and is almost entirely within portions of Redwood National and State Parks. Two action alternatives X and F are proposed - Alternative X would involve reengineering within the existing roadway; Alternative F would construct an approximately 10,000-foot-long tunnel that would diverge from the existing roadway and reconnect to US 101 further along the alignment to avoid the surface portion of the existing roadway most prone to landslides and geological instability.
