Description:

New Jersey Transit is proposing to replace the existing century old, 3,000 foot long Raritan River Swing Bridge damaged by Superstorm Sandy. When constructed, the new rail bridge will be more resilient to coastal flood damage, providing more efficient and reliable commuter rail service on New Jersey Transit’s North Jersey Coast Line. The new bridge will provide a similar ancillary benefit to freight rail operating on the New Jersey Transit track and include a new movable span to improve the safety and reliability of maritime navigation on the Raritan River.

The scope of the project is:

  • Construction of a new rail bridge spanning the mouth of the Raritan River between the City of South Amboy and City of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. The new bridge will be located parallel to- and immediately west of- the existing rail bridge.
  • Replacement of the existing 300-foot swing bridge moveable span with a 300-foot lift bridge span to improve maritime navigation safety and capacity.
  • Removal/demolition of the existing bridge following completion of the new bridge.
