Description:

The Garwood Bridge over the San Joaquin River (Bridge No. 29-0050) is a steel through-truss swing span and reinforced concrete deck on steel stringers and floor beams resting on reinforced concrete piers set on timber piles. In the past, the bridge used to open for vessel traffic but has been closed since 1984.
The project is located on State Route 4 at post-mile (PM) 14.2. There are three proposed build alternatives, and a no-build alternative. The no-build alternative would not meet the purpose and need identified for this project. The three build alternatives are proposed as follows:
1.    Structural rehabilitation: Rehabilitating the bridge deck, repairing the damaged steel truss members, restoring and repairing fracture-critical beams, and upgrading the bridge rails to current standards.
2.    Structural and mechanical rehabilitation: Rehabilitating the bridge deck, repairing the damaged steel truss members, repairing fracture-critical beams, restoring the mechanical and electrical components for an emergency bridge opening, and upgrading the bridge rails to current standards.
3.    Bridge replacement: Demolition/removal of the existing bridge and construction of a replacement with an approximate 9 foot high profile at the bridge, capable of allowing vessel passage requirements per Coast Guard regulations, without the use of any mechanical opening device. Installation of the new bridge will also require removal of the smaller Cordes Ranch UC (Bridge No. 29-0051), approximately 26 meters east of Garwood Bridge.
