Description:

The Metropolitan Council is the project sponsor for the Southwest Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project (METRO Green Line Extension). The project will operate provide new light rail service from downtown Minneapolis through the communities of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie, passing in close proximity to Edina.  The proposed project would add over 14 miles of new track as well as 15 new stations, several of which will have park-and-ride lots. It would be part of an integrated system of transitways, including connections to the METRO Blue Line, the Northstar Commuter Rail line, bus routes, and proposed future transitways.  The LRT line would link several major activity centers, including Target Field on the corridor's eastern end and the Eden Prairie Center Mall on the corridor's western end.  At Target Field Station in Minneapolis, Green Line Extension trains will continue along the METRO Green Line, providing one-seat rides to the University of Minnesota, State Capitol area, and downtown St. Paul.
