Description:

Caltrans District 12 proposes to improve a segment of State Route 74, also known as Ortega
Highway, in unincorporated Orange County from 0.8 mile west of the San Juan Hot Springs Canyon
(Post Mile [PM] 11.50) to the Orange/Riverside County line (PM 16.60), excluding the San Juan
Canyon Bridge (PM 13.28 to PM 13.33). The project is needed because SR-74 currently experiences
high cross-centerline collisions. Additionally, the segment of SR-74 within the project limits
experiences wet pavement due to the existing pavement conditions and to inefficient drainage. The
project proposes to reduce the number and severity of collisions by resurfacing the existing asphalt
concrete (AC) roadway surface with High Friction Surface Treatment (HSFT) to address wet
pavement collisions, constructing a continuous 4 ft shoulder in both directions and bringing existing
non-standard lanes to standard 12 ft lanes and providing super elevation improvements and
constructing 10 ft shoulders for acceleration/deceleration at the San Juan Fire Station.
