Description:

The purpose of the project is to perform permanent restoration of damage incurred by rigorous storm events. The slope has sustained severe surf erosion, which has undermined the roadway, and high intensity storms have resulted in cracks and displacements of the roadway shoulder. The construction of two secant walls at post miles 4.0 and 4.2 is proposed to provide adequate slope protection and stabilize the roadway.

There are three alternatives for the project. In Alternative 1 – Cantilever Option, the secant walls are proposed to be constructed with 60” piles, and will not require slope excavation. In Alternative 2 – Ground Anchor Option, the two secant walls are proposed to be constructed with 42” piles and stabilized by anchors, requiring some slope excavation. Metal beam guardrails will be removed during construction and replaced with Midwest Guardrail system in both build alternatives. Alternative 3 is the No-Build Alternative, in which none of the proposed improvements would be constructed, and the stability of the roadway would remain unchanged.
