Description:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to replace the Santa Maria River Bridge (No. 49-0042) on State Route 1 (SR-1) at PM 50.3/50.6 in Santa Barbara County and at PM 0.0/0.3 in San Luis Obispo County. The Santa Maria River Bridge crosses the boundary of Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County.
As mentioned, the proposed project will occur on SR-1 in both northern Santa Barbara County and southern San Luis Obispo County. The bridge is located just north of the City of Guadalupe in Santa Barbara County. The 1,200 feet long bridge was built in 1955 and was seismically retrofitted in 1998. The existing bridge sections consist of two 12-foot lanes, two 2-foot shoulders and two 32-inch wide curbs supporting metal bridge rails. Multiple bridge inspections have determined that the bridge’s structural integrity has deteriorated and action is required to protect the traveling public. Temporary access will be required for bridge work and for work in the river. Vegetation removal will also be required. Construction equipment will need to operate in the riverbed.
