Description:
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) proposes to replace two ageing bridges along State Route (SR) 9 in Santa Cruz County, within the boundary of the Boulder Creek Census Designated Place: the 80-year-old San Lorenzo River Bridge (No. 36-0052) and 90-year-old Kings Creek Bridge (No. 36-0054). The San Lorenzo River Bridge is located about 0.5 miles north of the town core of Boulder Creek (Post Mile [PM] 13.6), and the Kings Creek Bridge is located in the Redwood Grove neighborhood (PM 15.5). State Route 9 near the project is a rural, 2-lane undivided conventional highway that runs through the Santa Cruz Mountains, along the steep banks of the San Lorenzo River.
Both existing bridges are older than the typical 75-year service life of a bridge and have been found to be structurally deficient. The San Lorenzo River Bridge exhibits deck and soffit distress, cracking, and poor paint condition, while the foundation of the Kings Creek Bridge is vulnerable to scour related issues. Both bridges also have non-standard bridge railings, non-standard sidewalks, and lack shoulders.
