Description:

The Northwest light rail extension project is a two-phased light rail project which extends Valley Metro's existing light rail system's previous terminus at 19th Avenue and Montebello Avenue to the Metro Center Mall.  The first phase of the Northwest light rail extension from 19th Avenue and Montebello Avenue 3.2 miles north to 19th Avenue and Dunlap Avenue was opened for revenue service in March 2016.

The Phase II Northwest light rail extension project will extend the light rail system west on Dunlap Avenue, north on 25th Avenue. and across I-17 near Mountain View Rd. with a terminus on the west side of the freeway near Metrocenter Mall. The Phoenix City Council approved the I-17 crossing in 2014.

In January 2016, the Phoenix City Council approved accelerating segments of the future high-capacity/light rail transit system. With the acceleration, it is anticipated that the Northwest Phase II extension will open in 2023. Valley Metro is in the process of completing the federally required Environmental Assessment (EA). Community outreach is ongoing.
