Description:
7/31/18 Rachel Mills-Coyne (copied over from PAPAI): This project proposes to construct a building which will encroach upon the airspace of I-5 (one corner extends over an existing off-ramp). It will also require the closure of an off-ramp. These and other right-of-way approvals constitute the FHWA nexus for the project. There is some controversy (primarily from the operators of an adjacent historic theater) and there was an EIS at the state level (SEPA).
The purpose of the project, as currently defined, is to construct an addition to the existing Washington State Convention Center.
(copied from project website): Following the years of study and demand from convention goers who prefer to meet in Seattle, the Washington State Convention Center (WSCC) is proposing to build an additional facility. The WSCC Addition will be a transformative project that provides a host of economic benefits, including as much as $240 million annually in visitor spending, as many as 3,900 direct and indirect jobs, and some 6,000 jobs during construction. The funding will come primarily from a bond issuance by WSCC supported by the existing tax on hotel rooms.
WSCC has a strong, voluntary commitment to partnering with WMBE businesses. These companies are critical to making the WSCC Addition a success.
