Description:

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay (OIPCB) proposes to widen and deepen the Coos Bay Federal Navigation Project from the ocean to river mile (RM) 8.2 to improve navigation efficiency, reduce shipping transportation costs, and facilitate the shipping industry’s transition to larger, more efficient vessels.  The OIPCB is using an authority provided by the U.S. Congress under Section 204 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1986, as amended.

The Port is coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Portland District on the design and engineering of the proposed alteration and long-term maintenance of the channel.  The OIPCB is evaluating channel modifications and maintenance dredging of the channel and inlet; possible modifications to the jetties would also be evaluated.  This is a single-purpose study for deep draft navigation.  Physical construction cannot commence until the 33 USC 408 permission and Section 404 (CWA) permit are received from the Corps of Engineers.
